The Nomad’s Top Tips for Traveling to New Orleans, Louisiana

Make the most of your Nola trip! Follow these tips for traveling to New Orleans, Louisiana to ensure your visit is smooth and enjoyable.

During my last visit to the Big Easy, news of Hurricane Barry had swept media across the nation and thankfully we were able to get back to California just in time. New Orleans is no doubt one of my favorite cities of all time, but it does come with some risks. If you want to avoid these mishaps on your next trip to Nola, read on.

+ Beware of hurricane season

… No, I’m not referring to the #hurricaneslurricane drink. I’m so thankful we were able to leave New Orleans before Tropical Storm Barry  hit. With the potential of an incoming hurricane, our trip would’ve been a complete wash. No pun intended. Before booking your next trip to New Orleans, keep in mind that hurricane season runs from June- November… I know, I know. Oh, so convenient for your summer trip! Keep in mind, hurricane season runs for many locations across the the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. Personally, I’d recommend visiting in fall towards the end of hurricane season. The weather is mild compared to the summer heat and there’s nothing quite like celebrating Halloween in New Orleans.

+ Beware of humidity & scorching temperatures

Not only is hurricane season unpredictable, but the weather can be wonky with a capital W. Some days are warmer than others, but what you really need to pay attention to is the humidity. Between the heat and moisture, the air can feel thick and sticky, so be sure to double check the humidity levels as well as the temperatures to pack appropriately. Humidity tends to die down towards the end of hurricane season. All the more reason to book in Spring or Fall!

+ Save on Uber & Lyft expenses

It may be more expense to rent an Airbnb or hotel room near the French Quarter, but it will save you carfare in the long run if you plan to hit Bourbon Street and/or Frenchmen Street numerous times during your trip. During my last trip to New Orleans, my squad and I averaged 7 miles walked per day! Not only will you save on the cost of a cab, but you can eat to your heart’s desire without the guilt of post-vacation weight gain.

+ Save on airfare

Some West Coasters don’t always realize how costly it is just to get to New Orleans. With the typical round trip averaging $500, I’ve decided to invest in Chase’s Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card. It costs $90 per year to renew, but I’ve earned 2 free round trip flights to New Orleans, LA and a free round trip to Nashville, TN with this card. In my opinion, it’s well worth the small investment! It’s also great for international travel, providing card holders with the chance to purchase items without any foreign transaction fees! If you’re not a Southwest airline fan, I highly suggest asking your preferred airline what they offer for frequent flyers.

+ Save on drunchies

I’m going to tell you a little secret… the best po’ boy sandwiches are located inside hole in the wall convenience stores such as Verti Marte, located on Royal Street. I highly recommend stopping in for a late night bite to take back to the Airbnb where you can snack in peace with your fellow Nola travelers.
